Dieter's quarter-life crisis changed everything

"I always told myself that it was just who I was and I couldn't change that," she says.

Then, in January 2009, on the eve of her 25th birthday, she weighed 292 pounds and lacked the confidence to go out to party with her friends.

"I couldn't keep up with them. I felt like I was 50 years old. I was lazy and slow, and I wanted more out of my life. I was only 25, for crying out loud.

"I decided to take a new direction in my life."

Whalen threw out the junk food in her house and started eating healthier and exercising more. She lost 6 pounds in a couple of weeks, and then a friend suggested they both sign up for the Weight Watchers program online and support each other.

So she did that and lost 56 pounds in seven months, dropping from a size 24 to a size 18. She has worked hard to keep it off since then.

At 5-foot-5, Whalen, 27, now weighs 236.
