Choose Your Sandwich Meat Wisely
When shopping for lunch food, don't be misled by "fat-free" labels. As the table below shows, a slice of regular turkey breast would be a better choice than a deli meat labeled "95% fat-free" - in terms of both calories and fat content.
The table shows the fat content and calories from a 1-oz serving of various sandwich meats. In the turkey bologna, more than 60% of the calories come from fat -- double the recommended guideline.
| Lunch meat | Fat content | Calories |
| turkey breast - 1 oz | 0.2 g | 35 |
| turkey bologna - 1 oz | 4.0 g | 55 |
| lean ham (labeled "95% fat-free") - 1 oz | 1.4 g | 37 |
| regular ham - 1 oz | 3.0 g | 52 |
| chopped pressed pastrami - 1 oz | 2.8 g | 40 |
Be sure to read labels carefully, and look at the actual fat content, when you're shopping for heart-healthy choices.
